Michael Fearn is originally from Kendal in South Cumbria, where he cut his musical teeth in the Folk clubs of the Lake District. He comes from the same tradition that produced such artists as the late Isaac Guillory and John Renbourn, to whom he has been compared in the press [La Nouvelle République].

What makes Michael a little different from the general run of ‘singer songwriters’ is that solo, instrumental music is a very important part of what he does. Any concert is usually composed of approximately 60%, self-composed acoustic instrumental pieces and 40% original songs. He sometimes incorporates a minority of songs or arrangements of tunes by other artists, or traditional items, depending upon venue.

He has tried to develop a style that is very personal and some would say is close to classical music and jazz in many ways; but is firmly routed in the contemporary acoustic tradition that originally arose from folk guitar. No-one listening to him play would ask, ‘Where are the other instruments?’ No listener or collaborator has ever been able satisfactorily to categorise exactly what genre of music Michael writes, but his roots and references are in Folk-Rock, Progressive Rock, a touch of Jazz and the input from his parents and grandmother, who instilled in him a great love and respect for music in general.

Michael’s father was a dance-band drummer throughout the years from 1920 to 1950 and exposed him to a lot of the big-band music of that time.

Michael continues to write and perform. His love of music and his dedication to it are evident within his consistent development of new work. With the love and support of his family, friends and fans Michael’s passion for music keeps him forging on and performing.
